McNair/Student Support Services Best Practices and Professional Development Seminar, February 26-27, 2010

On February 26 and 27, 2010 a two day McNair/Student Support Services Best Practices and Professional Development Seminar will be held aboard the Historic Queen Mary in Long Beach California. (It is being held during the two days prior to the Annual WESTOP Conference.)
McNair and SSS staff and students are encouraged to register for this historic McNair/SSS professional development conference in Long Beach, California, Friday, February 26 and Saturday, February 27, 2010.
Sessions For McNair and SSS Graduating Seniors Include:
- A panel discussion with former McNair Scholars who are current Ph.D. recipients teaching on college campuses
- A roundtable discussion with current McNair Scholars: Best Practices for Preparing Students for Graduate School from Students’ Perspectives
- Opportunities for SSS students to be mentored by current McNair Scholars.
Workshop Sessions On:
- How to Find the Best Graduate Program
- The First-Year Experience: What to Expect in the First Year of a Ph.D. program
- Concrete Steps to Better Statements of Purpose
- How to Get Connected Using Technology to Network
Student Registration Fee: $250.00 includes 2 banquet luncheons, one plated breakfast, reception, special peer mentoring, and group no host dinners at Long Beach restaurants with current McNair Scholars.
Staff Registration Fee: $350.00
This is a rare opportunity for students to learn how to become successful graduate school applicants, Ph.D. recipients, and college faculty and researchers by participating in an exchange of ideas from former McNair Scholars who are currently college faculty members, McNair and SSS staff, and current McNair Scholars from across the country.

Who Should Attend: McNair Directors and Staff, Student Support Services Personnel -2year and 4-year Programs, Graduate School Admissions Officers, and Others Interested in learning how to prepare underrepresented students for graduate study.
Why Should You Attend: 1)To receive the latest information on preparing low-income, first-generation college students and students from groups underrepresented in graduate education for graduate study from experienced McNair directors and graduate school admission preparation personnel; 2) to hear from former McNair Alumnae who are Ph.D. recipients about the benefits they received from their participation in the McNair program and their recommendations for improving services as a result of their doctoral study; 3) to network and share valuable information on implementing services to prepare students for graduate study with your colleagues from 2-year, 4-year, and graduate schools as described in the new upcoming SSS grant cycle; 4) to receive practical program management information; and 5) to receive professional development advice on how to advance your career in higher education administration.
