Each year Randall Reilly Publishing sponsors Randall Outstanding Undergraduate Research Awards at The University of Alabama. In spring 2009, two McNair Scholars received these prestigious awards: Robin Cobb and Susan DeLeon. They both presented their research in multiple venues, including national scholarly meetings.
Robin Cobb, selected for her research with Dr. Fred Andrus and Ph.D. candidate Miguel Etayo- Cadavid, in Geological Sciences, conducted her study, in part, in conjunction with other work at the Dauphin Island Marine Research Laboratory: “Rangia cuneata Shells as an Environmental Proxy: Variations in Elemental Concentrations.” Robin’s research was featured at the 2008 Joint Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America and other geological organizations, in Houston.
Susan DeLeon’s award-wining research was conducted in the Biological Sciences with Dr. Guy Caldwell, Dr. Kim Caldwell, and doctoral student Shusei Hamamichi. The research, “Hypothesis-based Screening of Candidate miRNAs in Dopaminergic Neuroprotection,” was selected for presentation at the 2008 scientific meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology, in San Francisco. Susan was also among the few McNair Scholars nationally who were featured in plenary sessions at Berkeley’s 2008 McNair Scholars research symposium.
